Partner Matthew Kramer Provides Insight Into Florida Governor's Extension of Rent Moratorium

Miami Herald

In an article published by the Miami Herald, Partner Matthew Kramer provides insight into the implications of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ decision to extend the state’s moratorium on evictions and foreclosures until August 1.

With only hours left until the moratorium was set to expire, Governor DeSantis’ announcement of its extension elicited a variety of responses from housing advocates and landlords. While many advocates for rent relief were elated, landlords faced frustration as rent payments were once again delayed.

With this additional extension, whether the evictions filed during the moratorium will ever progress through the court system remains unknown.

“I think it will be up to the individual judge to decide, but I can certainly see some judges taking issue with the filing of any eviction papers during the moratorium period,” Kramer said. “The reality is, if you’re aggressive in evicting tenants who can’t pay, it’s going to be difficult to find tenants to re-let those units in the current economy. From a business standpoint, it may be best for landlords to work with existing tenants.”
