For over three decades, Grant Smith has served as a trusted legal advisor and advocate in the defense and transportation industries, representing major motor carriers, insurers, and corporate clients in high-stakes litigation across the country. His legal career has been marked by deep subject-matter focus and a results-driven approach in handling complex commercial transportation and construction matters.
Grant’s academic credentials reflect a strong foundation in business and law, having earned his B.B.A. in 1983, M.B.A. in 1984, and J.D. in 1987—all from the University of Georgia. While in law school, he served on the editorial board of the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law, foreshadowing his long-standing commitment to professional excellence and leadership in the legal field.
A recognized thought leader in transportation law, Grant has held numerous leadership roles, including President of the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association and Chair of the Commercial Transportation Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association. He is a longstanding member of the GDLA Board of Directors and maintains active affiliations with key industry organizations such as the American College of Transportation Attorneys, Defense Research Institute, and Trucking Industry Defense Association.
Grant serves as national counsel to a leading motor carrier and regional counsel to several others, handling litigation nationwide—from Florida to Wyoming. He also represents a major construction insurer and recently defended a complex, multi-party construction dispute involving 19 plaintiffs and 9 defendants. Known for his professionalism and strategic advocacy, Grant is a frequent lecturer at national legal conferences, including those hosted by the Defense Research Institute, ABA Megaconference, and the American Trucking Association’s Litigation Center.
