Deb Ausburn Appointed to Human Resources Board
08/22/2005
Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue announced on Monday, August 22, 2005, the appointment of Deb Ausburn to the Board of Human Resources. Ausburn is an attorney with Weinberg, Wheeler, Hudgins, Gunn & Dial LLC, where her practice focuses on defending youth services organizations, including day care centers, schools, and camping programs. The 17-member Board of Human Resources is the governing body for the Department of Human Resources (DHR), with the responsibility for establishing agency policy and approving departmental budgets. DHR is one of the largest of the state's agencies, and its divisions include Aging Services, Public Health, Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases, and Family and Children Services. The department also regulates residential child care programs and adult long-term health care facilities.
Ausburn is a member of both the Georgia and the North Carolina bars. A 1986 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law, she clerked for Chief Judge J.L. Edmondson of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Ausburn has argued successfully before the U.S. Supreme Court, and gained significant trial experience as a federal prosecutor in North Carolina, prosecuting numerous violent crimes including child abuse. She is a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, the Junior League of Atlanta, and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta. Ausburn worked as a social worker with DHR before attending law school, and has served as a foster parent in Virginia and North Carolina.
She looks forward to bringing her vast experience to this appointment. DHR is charged with caring for Georgia's most vulnerable citizens, and its mission of protecting children is particularly close to her heart, explained Ausburn. "I am honored that Gov. Perdue asked me to serve on the Board, and I am eager to work with the rest of the Board members to help the department fulfill its mandate."
